Just passed away in the night
The way some people talk in the South softens up the force of the event. It is sort of "proper" to say things euphemistically rather than bluntly. For example. Arthur Miller died last night. No one would dare say such a thang. No, you'd bedd'r say "Arthur Miller passed away (passed on)last night". The same is true for burial. The person "will be laid to rest", and you conclude with "May he rest in peace"

If it's been a while a simple "They've passed" works too. You have to remember to always look up at the sky while you say this!
That is so true. And what about those things called an "awake". Can I get confirmation that that is a Southern thing. I've heard people call it "visitation" but so many people don't even have them thar awakes anymore. We used to literally sit up with the dead all night at the funeral home. But do they even do that nowadays? Help me out here someone.
I've always just heard it called a "Wake" - no a.
