My, What A Gomb...

I just returned from NC where I participated in a weddin'.

While I was there, my sister reminded me of a real, honest to goodness southern expression.

"We shore Gombed that up right..."

The other two musicians and I who performed at the weddin' were of the general opinion that we gombed up the music pretty good. (Ever-body said we done good, but we knowed we cudda done better...)

To "Gomb" something up means to generally make a mess of it.

You can also "Make a Gomb out of it" or "cause a Gomb" or even "Get Gomb all over something."

Have you ever hear'd of this'n?

Do ya know uv a 'nuther ex-preshun like it?

ROTFALMAO! It's great to read something light once in awhile. The post I write are for the most part political as are most of the posts I visit. Saw your comment on Mark Maness' Blog.

Hey KC, how are you? (We e-mail one another all the time, but never have run into her on a blog before!)

I've never heard "gobbed" up. I've heard "goobered up" (sounds rather nasty). Does "gombo" count. Ate some of that in Louisianna! :)

This is a probable source:
Gomb and Gombed may have traveled to America with the Germans in the 1700's. It's old Hungarian for button and buttoned up. Lots of Hugarian words made it across Slovakia and into Switzerland and Germany as the Palentine Christians were persecuted and they moved on. Most of them that came to America landed in Penn. in the 1700-40's and moved out to the West and down the Shannondoah Valley and into North Carolina on the Great Wagon Road.
Gombed also ment getting the button in the wrong button hole, thus it was all Gombed up.

Really old post, but I started looking up sloppin and gommin, and I found this. My mother always said to me growing up, "Stop sloppin and gommin in that kitchen and get those dishes washed!"
